Hi everyone....
after months of debating whether i want to use formula or breast feed...
I have decided to breastfeed mainly due to all the positive attributes that go along with it
for both me and the baby. (such as the baby getting my antibodies, my losing weight faster, etc.)...
however, I am EXTREMELY nervous.....
does it hurt a lot? I've been working on my masters but have decided to take at least a
semester medical leave to get used to being a mommy....
i was wondering if you had any advice or any ways to be better prepared to breastfeed for
when the baby comes! Thanks!

What a GREAT choice! :D

You probably won't find a bigger advocate for breastfeeding than me... it is the most wonderful bonding experience for you & your baby.

I breastfed both of my girls & would not have traded the time, effort, energy, & late nights that only I could do for ANYTHING.

Yes - for the first week it's gonna be uncomfortable. Advice: Get a lactation expert in your room at your birthing center ASAP after you deliver. They give really great advice on how to get your baby to latch on properly, etc. Also, get some Lansinoh - the BEST nipple cream. It's pure lanolin, (sticky stuff) and the absolute must for the first week - and after too. After about the first week, the pain subsides & it's just neat - as you both get to know each other.

You do not need to be nervous - nursing your baby is the most wonderful, natural thing a mommy can do! The only "downside" that I can see is that Daddy never gets to feed the baby... but we worked that out by letting Daddy do all the diapers! He loved it. (Really!)

Kudos on taking the time & making the effort to do the mommy thing right... you will never regret it.

I'm happy to answer any first-time mommy jitters you might have...

one of my greatest joys - motherhood.

Welcome. Sounds like you are on the right track :)

I second almost everything that GloryBaby said. It is one of the BEST decisions you can make for your little one and one of the BEST bonding experiences.

Have a GREAT day and I hope your pregnancy, birth, and baby's arrival go smoothly :)

I had this discussion in mind when I posted an article called PROCESS on FGAJ.
Here's an exerpt from the post there:
http://www.freedomgunsandjesus.com/

Quote:
Sometimes I wonder if God ever gets tired of showing us stupid people the same things over and over and over and over again. My brother says, “Every hundred years, all new poeple.”

It’s funny, but when I ask the question, I hear (in my heart) the answer: “No, child. Did you hate changing the diapers of your second daughter? Was it a burden to teach her how to walk? I fall in love with every one of my children, even more then you do.” Now I don’t know about you, but diaper time was bonding time, and I never hated it. My wife got to do the breast feeding, and when I was home, I did the diapers. I adore my children, and I marvel (and am amused) at listening to my daughter try to form words, sentences, and express her ideas, which are so important to her, and often TOTALLY confused and inaccurate. Her process is a joy for me. As much as she may want to be grown up, I’m perfectly content to spend every available moment with my 3-year old. I look forward to debating with her when she’s a teen or in college, but I don’t need to teach her those grown up things now.

We have 2 kids now and the first was a complete failure with breast feeding because my wife hurt her back and that threw her milk production out and it never recovered. Number 2 was fine.
Good luck.
